Boundaries and Interfaces [top]
In the spaces outside you, boundaries and interfaces are essential for clarity, collaboration, and resilience – whether in systems, relationships, or organisations. Boundaries define identity and scope; they protect integrity by marking where one domain ends and another begins. Interfaces, on the other hand, enable connection and exchange across those boundaries. They are the designed points of interaction that allow value, information, or energy to flow without confusion or conflict.
Without clear boundaries, systems collapse into chaos; without thoughtful interfaces, they become isolated and inert or unpredictable and, often, dangerous. Together, boundaries and interfaces create the structure for healthy flow—preserving autonomy while enabling meaningful collaboration.
External Wealth [top]
I started today’s conversation with references to boundaries and interfaces to your external wealth. It is important that we build these boundaries and interfaces with great care and monitor them with great attention so that our external wealth can be managed in a manner appropriate for serving its true master, our internal wealth.
When I first talked about the Internal-External Divide and the Axioms around them, I strongly recommended that you stay vigilant at the interface between what is external to you and what is internal to you.
But what about the boundaries and interfaces that are within you?
Internal Wealth [top]
In the language of my TEDx Talk, let us consider your business of living.
Let us assume that you do not just want this business to “survive” but that you do want this business to “thrive” and generate a lot of wealth for you. Then, the first thing to understand is that your business of living consists of 4 business units. They have their boundaries. They each also have interfaces with the other units.
The 4 Business Units [top]
The first business unit is one that forms the physical interface between you and the rest of the universe – it is the one that holds your physical wealth; It is the business that deals with your physical wealth. That includes the state of every cell of your body and, as we now know, billions of microbes that live on and in you.
This unit is the physical workhorse. As critical as it is for being the interface to the outside world, it does no thinking for the business.
The second business unit does what we like to believe is all the “clever thinking” for you – it holds your mental wealth; it is responsible for doing the complex work of planning things, from what you will eat for dinner to how you would like to pass your retirement years. This “clever thinking” business unit #2 is often not so clever. It makes all kinds of irrational, illogical and incorrect decisions. This business unit #2 does not always benefit because of the way business unit #3 interferes with its tasks of thinking and planning.
So, what is business unit #3?
The third business unit holds your emotional wealth; it has the capacity to take your entire business to the greatest of heights, but it is also the one that experiences the Unholy Trinity; as a result, it places a lot of emphasis on the here and now – it wants to avoid pain, it wants to seek pleasure and it wants you to conserve energy; it is the one that typically prevents the other 3 units and the entire business from flourishing;
The fourth business unit, which I will argue is the most important, is the one that houses your spiritual wealth—your sense of purpose, connection, and meaning. To increase this form of wealth and use its power, we must first understand the gateways that lead to it.
The Boundaries [top]
If you allow it, it is easy for another person to see, hear, touch, smell and even taste you. The boundary of your internal physical wealth is easy enough to understand.
Your mind is not a physical object—nor are your emotions, nor your spirit. These dimensions of internal wealth exist beyond the material, yet that does not mean they are without structure. Each holds its own integrity, its own rhythm, its own domain of experience. The boundaries between mental, emotional, and spiritual wealth are not made of skin or stone, but they are real. They define the contours of how we think, feel, and connect with something greater than ourselves. These boundaries help us name and navigate our inner world, even if we cannot touch them. So, then how do we interface with, influence and shape them to flourish?
The Interfaces [top]
For your internal physical wealth, the interfaces to the outside world are visible and tangible. Your skin is an interface for touch. Your eyes, ears, nose, tongue—each a gateway through which the world enters and interacts with your body.
The same is not true for your mental, emotional, and spiritual wealth.
For your mental, emotional, and spiritual wealth, the boundaries are not physical walls—they are conceptual membranes – porous and ever-changing. The interface between your mental clarity and emotional state experiences continuous flow: a single thought can stir a wave of feeling; a single emotion can cloud or sharpen the mind. Likewise, your spiritual health—your sense of meaning, purpose, and connection—can uplift your emotions or anchor your thoughts in peace. These interfaces are where the flow happens. They are the bridges across which value moves, invisibly, shaping how you experience life. Understanding these interfaces allows us to work with the flow, not against it—so that each form of internal wealth supports and nourishes the others.
But what else might we be missing? At a nitty-gritty level, zoomed in, through what precisely can you interface with and have an impact on your mental, emotional, and spiritual wealth?
The Hard Truth to be Aware Of [top]
Observe this carefully:
You can interface with and have an impact on your mental, emotional, and spiritual wealth only through the physical layer.
Your physical layers are the gateway—the only tangible medium through which internal wealth can be accessed, nourished, or disrupted. Whether it is movement, breath, nutrition, sleep, or sensory experience, every act of care or neglect toward your physical self ripples inward. A walk can clear the mind. A hug can soothe the heart. A moment of stillness can open the spirit. Though your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs are intangible, they are shaped and expressed through the physical vessel you inhabit. Your body is thus the set of physical layers, the physical boundary between the external world and the other 3 forms of internal wealth. And, your physical body is also the business unit that is the interface to the other 3 forms of internal wealth.
Nothing that goes into the other 3 business units from the outside world can do so without passing through this first business unit. And nothing that leaves your business from the other 3 business units can do so without passing through this business unit.
When you eat food that you like, it must pass through this physical business unit – from mouth to anus via the digestive tract.
When you later tell someone how happy and satisfied you felt about what you ate, that conversation with emotions must also pass through this physical business unit – from memory storage in physical neurons in your brain to your tongue via electrical wiring and then through the air to the other person’s eardrums and via electrical wiring to their brain.
Implications [top]
This leads to the single most important practical implication: Reverence for your physical body is non-negotiable. It is the foundational condition for generating mental clarity, emotional resilience, and spiritual elevation.
Even a single day of physical pain, fatigue, or illness can cloud your joy, blur your focus, and dim your capacity to learn or grow. When such states persist, they become barriers—not just to happiness, but to the very evolution of your inner life. Drowsiness dulls perception. Pain narrows possibilities. These conditions do not merely affect your body; they shape the terrain of your mind, heart, and spirit.
To elevate your soul, you must first stabilise the vessel. Every act of physical care—rest, nourishment, movement, breath—is an act of inner alignment. Your body is not just a container; it is the living interface through which all internal wealth flows.
When I say that my spiritual wealth is what is most important to me, it is not a contradiction that I invest my resources in ensuring that my physical health is excellent. It is, in fact, a credible demonstration of what I place most value on – my spiritual wealth.
Using the Physical Interface [top]
Here are 3 practical examples each, demonstrating how you can use the wealth of your physical body intelligently to enhance the other 3 components of your internal wealth.
The Physical Interface for Mental Improvement [top]
This is about using the body to directly alter the state and function of the mind—clearing brain fog, enhancing focus, and facilitating learning.
- Glymphatic System Flush via Sleep & Posture During deep sleep, the brain’s glymphatic system flushes out toxins like beta-amyloid. This cleansing depends on lying horizontally, which shifts cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. A single poor night’s sleep disrupts this process, leaving your brain physically clogged—resulting in fog, not just fatigue.
- Cardio-Driven Neurogenesis Sustained cardiovascular exercise elevates BDNF, a protein that promotes neurogenesis in the hippocampus—key for memory and learning. By increasing heart rate and blood flow, you’re not just energising the body; you’re fertilising and expanding your mental hardware.
- Bilateral Movement to Break Cognitive Loops When stuck in anxious or obsessive thought, bilateral movement like walking—especially in nature—stimulates both brain hemispheres. This rhythmic, cross-body motion helps dissolve looping patterns, often leading to spontaneous clarity or insight.
The Physical Interface for Emotional Improvement [top]
This is about using the body to regulate the nervous system, discharge emotional energy, and create the physiological conditions for calm and safety.
- Breath as a Vagal Lever Slow, diaphragmatic breathing (e.g., 4 seconds in, 6 out) activates the vagus nerve, shifting your nervous system from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest. It’s a physical intervention that calms the emotional unit without needing mental effort.
- Discharging Stress through Cardiovascular Exercise: Stress floods the body with action-ready hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. If you stay sedentary, that energy remains trapped, keeping your system on alert. Cardio—whether running, brisk walking, or intense movement—metabolises these hormones, releases endorphins, and resolves the emotional alarm physically. You are not just moving—you are completing the stress response cycle.
- Facial Feedback to Shift Mood: Your facial expression shapes your emotional state. Forcing a genuine smile—eyes crinkled, cheeks lifted—can subtly elevate mood. The brain reads the physical signal and infers happiness, while a slumped posture reinforces defeat.
The Physical Interface for Spiritual Improvement [top]
This is about using the body to transcend the sense of a separate self and experience connection, awe, and peace.
- Awe via Vastness and Cold Exposure Standing before vast landscapes or plunging into cold water overwhelms the senses, silencing internal chatter. This physical immersion dissolves ego boundaries, creating a moment of raw presence and spiritual connection.
- Posture and Breath as Meditation Gateways Meditation begins with the body: upright posture and breath awareness create a stable, dignified container. This physical alignment fosters openness, allowing the spiritual unit to feel safe, expansive, and receptive.
- Synchrony for Communal Transcendence Group chanting, dancing, or drumming synchronises bodies and rhythms, blurring individual boundaries. This shared physicality generates a neurobiological sense of unity—a felt experience of spiritual oneness.
A Holarchy but with a Physical Gateway [top]
Although it might seem like there exists a hierarchy, a more accurate view is that these four forms of wealth—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual—are deeply interconnected domains in a dynamic system, a holarchy. However, they are not neatly nested inside one another. Instead, they exist in a state of constant cross-talk and mutual influence.
But crucially, their interdependence is not symmetrical when it comes to actionable control.
While all domains influence each other, the physical layer provides unique and unparalleled leverage for a simple reason: it is the only one we can command with direct, volitional action.
First, consider these pathways:
- Trying to fix a mental problem (anxiety) with a mental solution (“stop worrying“) often fails. It is like a software program trying to debug itself while it is running—prone to errors and infinite loops.
- Trying to solve an emotional problem (grief) with an emotional command (“be happy“) is impossible. Emotions are responses, not direct commands.
- Trying to access a spiritual state (awe) through sheer willpower is futile. It is like trying to force yourself to have a creative breakthrough; the effort itself pushes it away.
Now, consider the physical pathway:
You cannot think your way into calm, but you can breathe your way into it.
You cannot wish your way into confidence, but you can posture your way into it.
You cannot reason your way out of depression, but you can move your way toward a more resourceful state.
The physical domain is the more reliable road to the entire system because it bypasses the chatter and resistance of the mind and emotions. It speaks directly to the underlying physiology that generates your mental and emotional reality.
In this holarchy, the physical is not the “lowest” level; it is the most accessible control panel. A change made at the physical level sends unambiguous, biochemical signals that every other domain—mental, emotional, spiritual—must respond to.
So, the path to mastering your internal wealth is not about figuring out which domain encompasses the other. It is about recognising that to elevate the whole system, you must start with the one part you can most reliably and directly command: your physical vessel. It is the primary interface, the fundamental lever, and the stable ground upon which the entire temple of your inner wealth is built.
Pissing Off Your Priest [top]
So, what is the fundamental element that 99% of religious preachers miss? It is not a matter of doctrine or dogma, but a matter of practical interface.
They often speak of elevating the spirit through faith, promises to God, and righteous thought—bypassing the physical as merely temporary or even sinful. They point to the mountain peak but neglect the only path that leads there: the physical body.
The missed truth is this: Your spiritual and emotional evolution is gated by your physical state. You cannot consistently access profound peace, clarity, and connection—the hallmarks of spiritual wealth—if your fundamental physical interface is unstable, neglected, or abused. A tired body produces a foggy mind. A malnourished body fuels a volatile emotional unit. A tense, sedentary body constricts the flow of energy that the spiritual unit needs to flourish.
This is not a denial of the spirit, but its ultimate validation. To honour the spirit, you must honour its vessel. The most profound spiritual practice, therefore, may not be found solely in a book or a temple, but in the conscious, daily act of caring for your physical business unit.
The elevation of your internal wealth begins not with a thought, but with a breath. Not with a wish, but with a walk. Not with thoughts within prayer alone, but with the profound reverence of a good night’s sleep and a nourishing meal.
Your body is the door to your soul. The quality of your internal wealth depends entirely on how you choose to open and close it.
Putting it All Together – Shaolin Monks and Yoga Teachers [top]
We began with a question: What is the fundamental element most spiritual guides miss? The answer is not found in doctrine, but in the very architecture of the self.
You are the steward of a holarchy—an intricate system where your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wealth are distinct yet inseparable, engaged in multiple dialogues. A troubled thought can tense a muscle; a spiritual insight can bring peace to your entire being.
Yet, for practical self-mastery, a critical asymmetry exists. You cannot directly command your emotions to be calm, your mind to be clear, or your spirit to feel connection through sheer will. Trying to do so often backfires.
But you can always command your body.
This is a truth embodied not just by Shaolin monks, but by any genuine yoga teacher. Their entire practice is a living testament to it. They do not see the body as separate from the spirit, but as its primary instrument. Through precise postures (asanas), conscious breathing (pranayama), life-enhancing nutrition, and mindfulness practices, they use the physical interface to systematically cultivate mental focus, emotional balance, and spiritual connection.
You can apply the same principle. The decision to breathe deeply, to move, to rest, or to nourish yourself is a strategic action taken at the only interface where you have direct, volitional control. Your physical self is the master key to the entire system. A change at the physical level sends a cascading signal upward, reshaping your mental clarity, stabilising your emotions, and creating the conditions for spiritual openness.
This is the profound, practical truth: The path to the soul is paved by the body. You need not become an ascetic, but you can adopt this fundamental wisdom. To elevate what is within, you must first honour the vessel that contains it. The most sacred practice may begin not with a complex prayer, but with a single, conscious breath.
The boundary around your greatest wealth is maintained by your skin and bones. Its most powerful interface is the one you can touch and consciously control. Master that, and you hold the key to everything within.
Tracking [top]
Understanding this holarchy is the first step; actively managing it is the next. The most effective method for this is systematic tracking and journaling. Think of it as installing a dashboard and logbook for your “business of living.”
Do not just journal about your thoughts and feelings. Instead, track the tangible inputs and outputs across your interfaces. Record your physical metrics: sleep quality, nutrition, exercise, and resting heart rate. Then, note your corresponding mental, emotional, and spiritual states. Did a week of consistent early nights sharpen your focus? Did a midday walk prevent an afternoon emotional crash? Did ten minutes of mindful breathing before a meeting open a door to more patient and creative thinking?
This practice moves you from speculation to evidence. It reveals your unique, personal leverage points. You will stop seeing a bad mood as a mysterious cloud and start seeing it as a consequence of poor sleep and excessive caffeine. You will stop forcing spiritual connection and start creating it through physical conditions—like stillness in nature or communal singing—that reliably open the gateway for you. Journaling becomes the feedback loop that turns self-awareness into self-mastery, proving that the master key to your inner wealth is, and has always been, the conscious stewardship of your physical self.
